Oakham Festival Asks Oakham Town Council for £2500

It is that time of the year when Good Old Friends of Oakham Town Council come forward with the begging bowl outstretched for Council Tax Payers money. Despite a request by Councillor Alf Dewis that the council should not advertise the availability of community grants the council placed a small mention on its website.

I was hoping some deserving community groups in Oakham would apply, I saw a new name amongst the applications and the soon became disappointed when I found the application for £2500 has come from Cllr Nowells wife.

The Festival makes a few errors as usual in its application it starts of well by saying the festival is for the benefit of Oakham Residents. then goes wrong by saying its a benefit for Rutland and Visitors. The law states community grants must soley benefit the residents of the parish and it must not be seen to benefit local business.

There was a time when the Oakham Festival was fun, Cllr Charles Haworth said in a recent meeting it was rubbish last year, I can't agree more with him.

The comedy was dead, people posted on facebook questions were the singers in the castle ground animals at the early stage of death.

I would like to think Oakham Town Council wont grant the requested £2500

Especially as some of those involved were instrumental in the destruction of The Town Carnival.

It will be interesting to see how Cllr Nowell votes on this and others because there is only  limited pot of around £10,000 and the CAB a good local community resource wants half that pot and his wife wants quarter. Of course he wont be able to vote on his wife's application. but that wont stop him voting against others to ensure his wife gets a cut.

Below is the application form from The Oakham Festival (publicly available document)
