Celebrations to Mark VE Day in Rutland

VE Day and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Rutland will light one of 100 official beacons at the event as part of a national day of celebration, which begins with a remembrance service at the Cenotaph in London.
Churches and cathedrals are being asked to ring their bells at 11am, as they did on VE Day in 1945,
and there will be a two-minute silence across the country at 3pm to mark the moment Winston Churchill declared an end to war in Europe.
Schools and local communities are also being encouraged to get involved by holding their own events and organising 1940s-style street parties.
On the Friday evening, a chain of more than 100 beacons will be lit across the UK. Rutland’s Beacon will be lit in the grounds of Oakham Castle at 9.32pm, following a special tribute.
Oakham Castle Gates Veterans of WWII are warmly encouraged to attend the ceremony at the Castle from 9pm. No prior booking is necessary, however further information is available from Rutland County Museum on: 01572 758 440 or by emailing: museum@rutland.gov.uk
