As part of a initiative to strengthen police visibility and community ties, several stations across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland will soon be adorned with a modern Victorian-style blue lamps. This historic symbol of law and order, first used in London in the 1800s, is making a comeback to remind residents of the vital role police play in keeping them safe.

To mark Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action, Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews announced plans to fund the installation of these Mercia Lanterns at strategic locations across the city and counties. Oakham's brand new police station is already, boasting a particularly large lamp relocated from the former station.

Oakham's Blue Light

The iconic Blue Lamp, as it became known, served as a beacon of safety and support for generations. Today, Commissioner Matthews aims to revive that very essence. "These values are just as important to our communities today," he explains, "and this is just one of the many ways I aim to reconnect residents with the policing values of the past."

More than just a symbolic gesture, the visible presence of a police station, with its reassuring blue light, signifies a renewed commitment to community policing. By bringing back this historical symbol, the Commissioner hopes to remind residents that their safety is a top priority and that help is always at hand.
