The UK's Best Christmas Lights, 2012, Oakham Town Council, £16,000 of Value

The UK's Best Christmas Lights, 2012, Oakham Town Council, £16,000 of Value

After complaints the council has managed to find some additional
for the left hand side of Mill Street.

Swans Antiques have purchased their only little Christmas trees.
Many other retailers complain about the Town Council poor
ability to provide decent Christmas Lights as trader they contribute
nothing to the cost of the lights. The local residents pay via their
council tax. I am not saying all the independent traders are greedy
some who charge inflated prices could give a little back to the
town that keep them in business.

It is very clear that after many years of Oakham Town Council
squandering hundreds of thousands of pounds of tax payers
money they are not up to the job. maybe the retailers could
take over the responsibility.

After the above photograph was taken of the Christmas Tree
paid for by the Town Council and then donate rather oddly to
the town by the Rotary. They chucked some more lights on
which I understand have been donated by Furleys.

Its good to see a few more lights on the tree!

Melton Road.

Church Street Oakham Christmas Lights

Gaol Street Oakham Christmas Lights comments on other
sites say this road along with the market place.

I think they looked better last year all new LED bulbs were
purchased last year for Gaol Street and the old stars and
Christmas Shape made it look more like Christmas. All those
have been trashed.

Melton Road Oakham, Yes there is only one string of lights
across this road?

The old lights for Market Street were destroyed

Its hard to believe Oakham has used the same company as
Stamford and paid the same money £16,000

A Melton Company was paid £10,000 to put up and take
down and store the lights, dumped them in a field making
them unusable. The Clerk said recently at a meeting the
Council has a good working relationship with this company
it is a disgrace...

On Monday evening the parish church of All Saints Church Oakham was decorated
by Gates for the annual Rutland NSPCC Carol Concert.

Each year the church fills with the good of Rutland to raise fund for the NSPCC.

Last year over £17,000 was raised. since the first concert nearly £70,000 has been
raised for the NSPCC.

The Rutland Committee led by Margaret Wheeler says "we can be very proud of
ourselves here in Rutland, for this concert has become the biggest single fundraiser
for the NSPCC in the whole of the East Midlands region of Notts, Lincs, Derby,
Northants, Leics and Rutland".

Perhaps next year the committee could find a bigger venue or hold two concerts
so ordinary people can attend and enjoy and help raise even more for the charity.

Half the church is cordoned of for reserved tickets many those rewarded with free
tickets for their help.

The remaining tickets sold out within two days.

And before Mrs Aston and her friends get their knickers in a twist, I am not publishing
the names of those who told me they did not pay, but will be happy to confirm that
privately.

People filled the Church, Sung carols and listened
to Caroline Aston and Performances by the Harborough
Singers and Forrester Brass 2000.

Melton Mowbray Royal British Legion

The Melton Mowbray Branch was formed on the 17th June 1921 and is the oldest branch in Leicestershire and just a short period from the Legion being formed nationally. When the Branch was founded, the members used to meet in the Oddfellows Hall in Melton and various venues within the town. At a meeting of the Legion members in October 1945 it was proposed to erect a permanent War Memorial and the Headquarters of the Legion in Melton. read more at: http://meltonmowbrayroyalbritishlegion.co.uk/history.html

Cllr Alf Dewis, Oakham Mayor, Civic Reception, 2012

at next weeks town council meeting Cllr Dewis is to raise the issue of the Mayors civic reception.

11. CIVIC RECEPTION 2012– Cllr Alf Dewis (Appendix D)
To receive a report from the Chairman

I am looking forward to see what Cllr Dewis has to say about this, in the past this has not been
an agenda item and often used by Mayors like Cllr Joyce Lucas to hold a private booze fuelled
party paid for by the tax payer.
