Ed supports the scrapping of police commissioners
A campaign to scrap Police Commissioners has got the support of a leading local Liberal Democrat.
A petition has been launched to scrap the elections for Police Commissioners due in 2016.
Supporting the campaign Rutland & Melton PPC Ed Reynolds said, "The Police Commissioner elections in 2016 are likely to cost up to £100 million. That money could be much better spent on frontline policing. The turnout in the first Police Commissioner elections in 2012 was a mere 14.9%. It is clear that there is no public demand for this politicising of the police."
"I hope people will sign the petition to abolish Police Commissioners at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/68799"
Author of the petition Sue James said, "I set up the petition, on the Government's website, because I want to try to get a debate during this Parliament. I think MPs now might come to the decision to end this costly experiment that the public has no appetite for. Otherwise, I fear, that after the General election it will not be a priority to discuss and the 2016 elections will take place at huge cost but without adding anything to the policing of our communities."
