The Whipper-In Market Place, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6DT, Soon to be transformed into the George Inn, Oakham.

The Whipper-In  Market Place, Oakham,  Rutland, LE15 6DT, Soon to be transformed into the George Inn, Oakham.

History in the Making: The Whipper-In Transforms Back into The George Inn, Oakham
Nestled in the heart of Oakham's bustling marketplace, a historic transformation is underway. The beloved Whipper-In, a charming 17th-century coaching inn, is returning to its roots and reclaiming its original name: The George Inn. This isn't just a renovation; it's a journey back in time, a chance to breathe new life into the rich tapestry of Oakham's past.

From Whipper to George:

The story of The George Inn begins in the late 16th century. A grand establishment catering to travellers and dignitaries, it quickly became a cornerstone of Oakham's social scene. Over the years, it witnessed countless milestones, from lively market days to intimate gatherings, becoming a cherished landmark in the town's heart.

In the 1980s, however, the inn underwent a transformation, adopting the name "The Whipper-In". While the change brought new life to the establishment, a thread of history remained woven into its very fabric. Now, with careful restoration and meticulous attention to detail, The George Inn is preparing to reclaim its rightful place in Oakham's heritage.

A Glimpse into the Past:

Step beyond the threshold of The George Inn, and you'll be transported to a bygone era. The characterful beams, the crackling fireplace, and the warm ambiance whisper tales of horse-drawn carriages and boisterous conversations. The meticulous restoration promises to preserve the building's unique charm, blending the old with the new to create a welcoming space that resonates with history while embracing the present.

More Than Just a Name:

The transformation of The George Inn is more than just a cosmetic change; it's a commitment to reviving the spirit of community and hospitality that once defined the establishment. The aim is to create a vibrant hub where locals and visitors can gather, forging new connections and celebrating the rich tapestry of Oakham's heritage.

A Toast to the Future:

As The George Inn prepares to open its doors once more, a sense of anticipation hangs in the air. It's a testament to the enduring power of history and the enduring charm of a well-told story. With its promise of warm hospitality, delectable food, and a touch of history, The George Inn is poised to become a cherished destination once again, weaving new threads into the vibrant tapestry of Oakham's present and future.

So, raise a glass to The George Inn, a phoenix rising from the ashes of time. Its return promises to be a delightful chapter in Oakham's ongoing story, one filled with laughter, shared meals, and the comforting embrace of a place steeped in history.

More about the George:

For centuries, the walls of this grand coaching inn have whispered tales of weary travellers seeking solace and lively gatherings where deals were struck and destinies intertwined. It has witnessed the pulse of Rutland's history, from hushed business meetings and the crisp delivery of legal pronouncements to the jubilant roar of election victories and the warm hum of local businesses coming together. Now, reborn as The George Inn, this cherished landmark embarks on a new chapter, ready to once again embrace the vibrant heart of our community.

The George Inn has embarked on a captivating journey, shedding its skin and revealing a fresh face brimming with elegance and charm. The first phase of this transformation has already breathed new life into the beloved landmark. All 22 bedrooms have been adorned with sumptuous décor, inviting guests to rest in luxurious comfort. The heart of the inn beats anew in the George Bar, Parlour and Dining Room, and the inviting Snug, each space exuding a distinct personality that promises intimate gatherings and delightful experiences. But this is just the beginning. The whisper of delicious possibilities hangs in the air, with plans to unveil a Supper menu not just on Fridays and Saturdays, but throughout the week, transforming The George Inn into a culinary haven for every day.

The transformation of The George Inn is far from over. In the next chapter, five new bedrooms will be unveiled, each a haven of exquisite comfort and elegance, exceeding even the current splendor. But that's not all. For those seeking an evening of cinematic indulgence, a boutique cinema awaits, promising intimate screenings and immersive experiences. And for those yearning for pampering, a hidden sanctuary – a small spa dedicated to rejuvenation and relaxation – will tantalize the senses. The George Inn is more than just a hotel; it's a tapestry woven with threads of luxury, leisure, and unforgettable moments waiting to be savoured.

Golden Scissors Turkish Barbers, 4 Market Pl, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6DT

Golden Scissors Turkish Barbers, 4 Market Pl, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6DT

A Touch of Turkey in Oakham: Golden Scissors Turkish Barbers

Nestled in the heart of Oakham's bustling marketplace, Golden Scissors Turkish Barbers isn't just your average barbershop. It's a portal to a traditional Turkish grooming experience, where meticulous haircuts meet the warm embrace of hospitality.

Step inside and you're greeted by the inviting aroma of Turkish coffee and the rhythmic snip-snap of scissors. The barbers, skilled artisans with years of experience, exude a quiet confidence, ready to transform your mane into a masterpiece.

A Cut Above the Rest:

But Golden Scissors is more than just haircuts. It's a ritual. It begins with a steaming hot towel draped over your face, melting away the day's stress and softening your beard for the expert touch of the barber's blade. The conversation flows easily, as if you're guests in their home, not clients in a chair.

Then comes the magic. The barbers wield their tools with practiced ease, sculpting your hair into a style that's both modern and timeless. They understand the nuances of facial structure and hair type, ensuring a cut that flatters and complements.

The Art of the Hot Shave:

No Turkish barbering experience is complete without a hot shave. The lather is applied with a flourish, transforming your face into a canvas for the barber's artistry. The straight razor glides across your skin with the precision of a surgeon, leaving behind a feeling of unparalleled smoothness.

The Finishing Touch:

And then, the pièce de résistance – the burning of ear hair. Yes, you read that right. This ancient Turkish technique uses a gentle flame to remove unwanted hair, leaving your ears looking and feeling impeccably groomed. It's a bit of a spectacle, but mostly, it's just another example of the attention to detail that sets Golden Scissors apart.

More Than Just a Haircut:

A visit to Golden Scissors is more than just a haircut; it's an escape. It's a chance to slow down, disconnect from the everyday, and indulge in a little self-care. It's a reminder that grooming can be an art form, and that sometimes, the simplest things done right can leave you feeling like a million bucks.

So, if you're looking for a haircut that's more than just a haircut, head down to Golden Scissors Turkish Barbers in Oakham. You might just walk out feeling like a Sultan.

Here are some additional details you might find useful:

Golden Scissors is open from Monday to Saturday, 8:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Steeped in nearly 200 years of history, AW Curtis and Sons has a lot to offer as one
of Lincolnshire's finest local establishments. The traditional, family business has grown
enormously from its initiation as a pork butcher in the 1800s, producing local pork of
the very best quality and freshness. Time has seen the business develop dramatically
yet the strong family ethos, local provenance and quality of the goods remains.

AW Curtis and Sons now boasts a total of 21 shops which span the breadth of the county,
selling a delightful range of products that includes traditional Lincolnshire favorites such as
plum bread, as well as delectable treats such as cakes, sweet and savory pastries and bread.

This morning I spoke to the company director Neil Curtis, he is very keen to see the store
ready and "serving the people of Rutland" later this month.

You can also shop online or take a peak at some of the tasty treats heading towards Oakham

I can't wait to try their famous Lincolnshire Plum Bread
