Braunston’s Community Spirit Shines Through the Clouds at Successful May Fayre, Photos

Braunston’s Community Spirit Shines Through the Clouds at Successful May Fayre

The grey skies over Braunston did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of residents this past weekend, as the annual May Fayre proved that community spirit is entirely weather-proof. Despite the lack of sunshine that Rutland enjoyed on Saturday, the event was a resounding success, drawing impressive crowds who traded sunglasses for light jackets to celebrate one of the most anticipated dates on the local calendar.

From the early morning setup, there was a palpable sense of "carrying on" as volunteers and vendors arranged stalls and stages under the muted May light. The absence of heat meant the village stayed bustling throughout the day, with attendees staying active and engaged rather than seeking shade, creating a constant, vibrant hum of activity across the village.

The main stage remained the heart of the celebration, where local performers brought a much-needed splash of colour to the afternoon. Primary school choirs and neighborhood dance troupes performed to packed audiences. The artisan market also saw heavy footfall, as visitors took their time browsing handmade crafts and bespoke jewelry.

The traditional dog show always a highlight of the Fayre saw a record number of entries, with hardy pups and their owners undeterred by the lack of sun as they competed for the top prizes under the watchful eyes of the crowd.

Perhaps most importantly, the event succeeded in its mission to unite the neighborhood and raise vital funds for local initiatives. It was clear that the success of the Braunston May Fayre isn't dependent on the forecast, but on the warmth of the people who call the area home. It was a day that proved Braunston doesn't need a clear sky to shine.

St. George's Day Celebrated in Oakham Rutland Morris and Mummers, Photos and Video

St. George's Day Celebrated  in Oakham Rutland Morris and Mummers

Yesterday evening as the Rutland Morris officially launched their summer season. In a vibrant celebration of St. George’s Day, the troupe brought a centuries-old English tradition to the heart of the Market Place, drawing a spirited crowd to witness their annual "dance out."

As the sun began to set, the Morris men clad in their traditional Cotswold whites and floral-adorned hats transformed the area outside The George Hotel into a stage for folk history.

The evening wasn’t just about the intricate footwork and the rhythmic clash of sticks. The highlight for many was the performance of the Rutland Mummers' Play. This folk drama, a staple of the group's repertoire, features a cast of archetypal characters including, St. George, the heroic defender of England. The Dragon/Bold Slasher the formidable antagonist. The Doctor a comedic figure who invariably arrives to "cure" the fallen with a dubious potion.

The play, which blends slapstick humor with ancient symbolism, serves as a traditional welcome to the "summer" half of the Morris calendar.

"It's about keeping the heartbeat of the county alive," noted one spectator. "Seeing the Morris men in the Market Place feels like the real start of the season."

If you missed yesterday's festivities, the troupe’s "summer of dance" is only just beginning.

Residents can look forward to the Dawn Dance in Oakham Market Place on May 1st (at the traditional time of 5:17 AM) and various appearances at local festivals throughout the coming months.

As is tradition with Rutland Morris, the evening also served a charitable purpose, with collections taken to support local Rutland-based causes ensuring that these ancient steps continue to do modern good.

Two old Oakamian's and their parents are using a helicopter this week to attend a English Schools' Cricket Association match. Unfortunately County Cricket, can no longer be played at Oakham due to the blot recently constructed at the side of the pitch.

The Helicopter landed today at 1.30pm on the school playing field just of Kilburn Road.

For all helicopter fans there will be two more chances to catch a look  It will return at 9.30am tomorrow morning (Tuesday 8th July) and again at 5pm tomorrow afternoon.  On each occasion, it will only be on the ground for around 5-10 minutes.

Thank you to Richard the pilot for allowing me a closer look.
