Last night Oakham Town Council members considered a letter from the High Sheriff of Rutland and considered whether to make any comment on the proposed closure of Melton Magistrates Court.
If the closure went ahead villains and bad driver would have to trek to Loughborough.
A poor villain who does not drive would have to rob to pay for a taxi or attempt to travel on public transport using two trains. (not the councils view)
Many Town Councillors did express a view.
Cllr Maureen Dodds said there was strong feeling at the recent parish forum at RCC. She highlighted the cost and lack of public transport to Loughborough.
Cllr Charles Haworth added his voice to the protest.
Cllr Alf Dewis said it was another example of taking work away from Rutland.
Cllr Tor Clerk endorsed Cllr Alf Dewis comments and reminded us all Justice has to be seen to be done
He suggested the abolishing of the annual ceremonial court held at Oakham Castle if the Melton Court Stays.
(I am not sure this will be a popular move amongst the establishment figures even though there could be a big saving if they did not pay a judge to attend and issue fines for minor motoring offenses)
Cllr Joyce Lucas said many Oakham local shops had petitions and all had many signatures.
(I have not seen these because I have no money so I don't go into these shops)
Oakham Town Council will be sending their objections to Mr Swales of Her Majesties Court Service for the Midlands Region.
