For the first time that I have ever known Oakham's Past Mayors have not had invitations to the Remembrance Day Service at All Saints church.
During past years Former Mayors have always received an invitation to the service. Perhaps the cuts are beginning to bite.

I found the above posted on Oakham People, The Royal British wrote to the Rutland Times inviting all to support remembrance Sunday tomorrow So I imagine Oakhams All Saints Church will be full of people from all walks of life this year.

I will be attending as Town Councillor for Oakham South East, I am told the Church Wardens who invited all Oakham Town Councillor will be reserving seats for us.

I will not be taking up the offer of a reserved seat. I object strongly to the title dignitaries, If I serve the public why should I have priority over them when it comes to seats.

I liked the follow up comment posted

isn't this occasion really about our war dead and not local dignitaries expecting preferential treatment. Besides I thought it would have been down to the Royal British Legion to recommend invitations.

I don't think it has anything to do with cuts, how can it?

Or could it be that you were a past mayor and you didn't get yours and so you are now feeling hurt?

If this is a past Mayor unhappy, then please speak to the Church Wardens, I am sure they will allow you to have my reserved seat and you can sit and gossip and scheme with your chums at the front of the Church.

The Town Clerk spoke to all former Mayors on Friday by phone, not sure if his was apologising or inviting.

Its is important to remember the reason for the day.

Many people gave their lives for us all to have freedom of speech and expression something many of the ex Town Mayors have sadly forgotten.

Past years has seen the public outside the church and so called dignitaries filing into the Church
lets hope this year the public invitation will be accepted.

It was good to see all the extra people out on the towns street on Friday

The letter failed to mention the times the Remembrance Day proceedings start later in Oakham
Church Service starts at 2.30pm All Saints Church Oakham.

Each year visitors do visit the war memorial at the more traditional time of 11.00am a tradition I have found hard to break since moving to Oakham.

YOU will be aware that this year marks the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion and it is timely to hark back to these early days immediately following the Great War, remembering the horrific number of casualties, killed and wounded.

And within the next 20 years another global war broke out lasting six years in which no fewer than 50 million people lost their lives.

There was hardly a house in the UK affected either by the death of the bread winner or some other equally dramatic catastrophe.,

Clearly something had to be done to alleviate the distress and pain affecting the whole country. So the Royal British Legion was formed to meet this need and it has been doing this ever since.

Could I ask, through the courtesy of your columns, to enlist the support of the people, many of whose ancestors fought so gallantly and selflessly in one or both of these conflicts.

In addition to the church service in the parish church in Oakham on November 13, and the associated wreath laying ceremony, there will be a march past along the High Street with the salute being taken by the Lord Lieutenant outside the old Crown Hotel, after which refreshments will be available in the HQ of the ATC building in Penn Street.
