Writing East Midlands, Book Award, Barnsdale Lodge, Jon McGregor, Oakham Festival Photographs

Writing East Midlands, Book Award, Barnsdale Lodge, Jon McGregor, Oakham Festival Photographs

I attended the reception and launch night of the Oakham festival.

I was so pleased that the festival decided to hold this launch outside Oakham.
At the splendid surroundings of Barnsdale Lodge Hotel. The trek out of town,
I am sure has helped me lose a few grammes.

If the event had been held at the normal venue, I would have not have been able to attend
because the Castle is Rutland County Council Property.

Some committee members expressed their disappointment that I can not photograph the main
events this year at the castle. I am not sure why the council and the police have sort this ban.
I can only assume it is to satisfy the whims of Councillor Joyce Lucas and her thick mob.
I have been told the stage will not even be facing the gate this year.

It was wonderful to hear the beautiful introduction from festival organizer Joy Everett, who gave a very elegant speech and introduction to the East Midlands book awards and of course Oakham Festival.

What a pleasant change from the perennial crass crudities of Ms Aston. Well done Joy encore 2014!
Crime writer John Harvey presented the East Midlands book prize to Jon  McGregor for his book published by Bloomsbury. Titled: This isn't the sort of thing that happens to someone like you.

We enjoyed sparkling wine and canapés from Hambleton Hall, music was provided by the Jazz Group Rossetta Jazz.

A super lady who helps out at the festival

Body Power Oakham Fitness Centre, Barnsdale Lodge

During Oakham Town Councils Financial year  it has spent a quarter of it income setting up a private
Fitness Centre in Oakham.

The council  lets the centre and will not see a return on the tax payers money throughout
the entire period of the lease.

This is an unacceptable state of affairs.

Why should the local tax payer support this one family,

A little research has found Mrs Spurdle the fitness centre director and company secretary is the PA to Ed Burrows of Barnsdale Lodge Hotel So I  am sure she is not on a low wage.

What interests me about this connection is Ed Burrows is Chair of the Discover Rutland Tourism Committee, Ed Burrows is also connected to many other Rutland committees. Many of those committees are connected to Oakham Town Councillors and its Mayor Alf Dewis.

Mrs Spurdle is often photographed alongside Ed Burrows as you would expect a PA to be.

I am not saying  Mr Burrows has done anything wrong.

What I am saying is most Oakham Town Councillors would know Mrs Spurdle  through their work as
Councillors on various committees and not one declared an interest.

If this is not corruption then it must be criminal.

Now it is clear to me why Oakham Town Council have let the property below market value and spent
a quarter of its annual income assisting this couple set up. The couple being Mr & Mrs Spurdle.

I spoke to the Deputy Mayor Adam Lowe and asked if anyone declared an interest in the exempt part of the meetings when this matter was considered, he said no. He went on to say one Cllr did say they knew Mrs Spurdle and she works at Barnsdale Lodge.

During the conversation  Cllr Lowe also repeated his surprise at the level of money spent on what was an old toilet. He also said more has been spent on the building than if it had been rebuilt and he should know with
his experience in the building trade.

Once again I am annoyed with the Clerk because of his lack of honesty, he told me this was a ordinary
couple from Normanton.

Last year I wrote my MP Alan Ducan to ask him who I should contact so this large expenditure can be investigated. So far he has ignored my request.

Barnsdale Lodge For Simon, treking along the Great Wall of China in April 2011

Paul Freeman, Kathryn McDonald, Richard Broughton and Jane Hales are treking along the Great Wall of China in April 2011 to raise money for 'Headway - the brain injury association.

Jane's 21 year old son Simon, a student at Newcastle University and long time waiter and barman at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury as the result of taking a wrong turn home in October 2009 and is currently still on the very long road to recovery.

We have been moved and inspired to embark on this challenge and raise money for Headway who offer huge support to those who have suffered brain injury, their families and friends.

They are not a high profile charity since unless your life has been affected most folk have no idea that they exist.

Richard Evans,Mark and Katherine Coleman, friends of Jane's from Rutland Running Club fundraised by asking for sponsorship and ran the Rutland Water Marathon on 7th November 2010. Sara Traylen, work colleague and friend will be 'swimming the channel' in the local pool and is also looking for sponsorship. Thanks so much to all 4 of you.

Stamford Farmers Ball Committee donated a STAGGERING £1000 from their Heads and Tails Competition - THANKYOU!!

More thanks to Toft House Hotel and Golf Course and the 64 brave men who played golf in horrendous conditions to help us raise £1500.00!!!

Remade in Rutland collected at their open days in Braunston and Market Harborough - THANKYOU!
Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities.

If you want to support the fund raising please visit Virgin Money Giving this a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for that is.

We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Please give as generously as you are able.
With many thanks.
