The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Sarah Furness placed some roses.

Its a shame there appears to have been no publicity about this event, so Oakham residents could have attended. 

I have been told there was a mention in the Rutland Mercury last week. The article incorrectly states it is a memorial for Rutland's fallen and cost £900. It cost £1000 and is a memorial to over 100 Oakham's fallen.

One hundred years ago the church yard was overflowing with residents when the war memorial was dedicated.

Friday 1st April 2022 is the 25th anniversary of Rutland regaining its status as an independent county, as well as the formation of Rutland County Council as a unitary authority.

Friday 1st April 2022 is the 25th anniversary of Rutland regaining its status as an independent county, as well as the formation of Rutland County Council as a unitary authority. 

Rutland was a district of Leicestershire from 1974 until 1997, regaining its independent status only after a long-running campaign by local councillors, residents and communities. 

“As well as being a huge milestone for the county, this anniversary is a chance to pause and think about the things we value most about living in Rutland. We have a lot to be thankful for – particularly after the past two years and everything we’ve experienced because of the pandemic. It’s also timely that 2022 is also the year in which Council agreed to endorse and adopt the community’s new shared vision for Rutland. This is something we can all work towards over the next 30 years and then look back on what all we have achieved together – maintaining our independence while continuing to work closely with our friends and neighbours.”

Oakham Library is hosting a display illustrating Rutland’s battle for independence, covering the campaigns from the 1960s to Independence Day on 1st April 1997, together with a selection of local history books telling the stories of England’s smallest County. Oakham Library is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday – Friday and 9.00am to 1.00pm on Saturday.

The full picture of our wonderful County can be explored in the displays at Rutland County Museum, which covers everything from fossils to Romans to the present day. Further details about the various collections on display at Rutland County Museum can be found online at: rutlandcountymuseum.org.uk. The Museum is open from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with no booking required.

First I question why are we still paying money for a clerk who is dishonest and incapable of doing most things correctly or providing members with the correct advice. It is disgusting that we have to pay for for this full time position and lets not forget the town is also paying for 'her friend' to be employed as an assistant, then we have a Cllrs wife who is paid to clean the expensive long row offices. I am pretty sure that comes close to breaking the law, I do know Cllrs can not be employed by the council, I would ask why the job was not advertised? but I won't.

Secondly if we are not going to have any events this summer and all we get is the grass cut and litter picked in the 3 tiny parks, manky expensive plants, and Christmas Lights why do we need this costly pointless town council?

I am told no one wants to do anything for the town, all they seem to do is fight each other and constantly fall out with Rutland County Council.

The neglect of the trees is a perfect example the Clerks failure to do their job. more branches fell this week.

The Council’s event process has not been changed as a result of the event at Rutland Showground.  Since the advent of the pandemic event organisers have been required to provide the Council with event management plans that demonstrate, alongside other aspects of event management, how an event can operate and meet Government COVID guidelines.  This is to protect public safety during the pandemic.  

Plans are reviewed and agreed by a multi-agency group including Public Health to ensure they are ‘COVID secure’.   Details of what we have been require event organisers to supply can be found on our website: www.rutland.gov.uk/my-community/organising-public-events/

We have been notified that Oakham Town Council has decided to cancel all planned events up to 18 July due to Government’s extension of COVID restrictions.  They are planning to hold a programme of events from 25 July onwards and have been advised of the need to submit their event management plans for review.
