Jham!

Wed 26 Feb 7.30pm

Srishti – Nina Rajarani Dance Creations
Jham! is a fresh, youthful, contemporary Indian dance and music piece built on a firm classical ground. The title, Jham!, is one of the rhythmic
syllables used in dance recitation, and also alludes to the idea of a musical jam - a feeling of improvisation and collaboration, the musicians and dancers working off one another to produce something new and exciting. This upbeat, playful and energetic work highlights the rhythmic play between the ancient and the modern.
‘Rajarani’s take on classical Indian dance is invigorating.’ The Times

History Talks: The Pilgrimage of Grace & The Lincolnshire Rising
THE PILGRIMAGE OF GRACE & THE LINCOLNSHIRE RISING

Wed 26 Feb 7.30pm

History Talks with Don Chiswell

The rebellion against Henry VIII during 1536-7 originated in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. It was directed against the policies of the monarch (such as the dissolution of the monasteries and the effects of the enclosure of common land) and was to shake the very foundations of the Tudor dynasty. What were its aims and why did it fail after its initial success? What part did Peterborough play in its suppression?

Peter Grimes - ENO LIVE SCREENING, Stamford Arts Centre

Peter Grimes - ENO LIVE SCREENING
Peter-Grimes

Sun 23 Feb 3pm - LIVE

David Alden’s five-star sell-out production of Britten’s hauntingly beautiful opera. ENO Music Director Edward Gardner conducts the electrifying score, with Stuart Skelton heading an outstanding cast. Sung in English.
Experience the searing psychological drama, intrigue and suspense of Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, screened live from the London Coliseum.
'An unmissable production that unleashes the opera's thrilling power' The Observer
'A tidal wave of sound that is virtually overwhelming' Sunday Express
David Alden’s award-winning production paints a vivid picture of a small community’s descent into suspicion, gossip and mob mentality in the face of a tragedy.
In a small coastal fishing village in Suffolk, fisherman Peter Grimes’s apprentice disappears at sea. What really happened to the boy? Was Peter Grimes involved? Despite the villagers’ suspicions, after questioning in court, Grimes is released without charge. Subjected to a hate campaign, Peter Grimes’s state of mind and behaviour becomes increasingly unstable. And then he takes on another apprentice with tragic consequences.
Peter Grimes contains some of the most evocative music ever written. The wildness of the sea and the instability of Grimes’s mind are superbly reflected in Britten’s music. Stuart Skelton in the title role has been described as the ‘definitive’ Peter Grimes and has performed the role all over the world.
Running time: 3hrs 10mins

Bridie Jackson and the Arbour

Sat 15 Feb 8pm

Sitting ‘somewhere between the lushness of Norah Jones and the quirkiness of Joanna Newsom’, Bridie Jackson & The Arbour’s music is simultaneously beautiful, ethereal, dark and powerful.

Recently announced as winners of the 2013 Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition, they released their début album in January 2012 and have since gained national recognition on BBC Radio.

With their sparse instrumentation, intriguing vocal harmonies, and influences as diverse as gospel, Baroque and flamenco; the Newcastle-based quartet are frequently proclaimed to be completely unique.
Enchanting, spellbinding, electrifying and magical, their live shows are not to be missed.
