Last night Oakham Town Council awarded £5,000 for The Queens Golden Jubilee Celebrations here in Oakham 2012.
A small working group is planning an event in Cutts Close no details have been given so far as to what these public celebrations will include.
The working group asked leader Deputy Mayor Cllr Charles Haworth asked for £5,000 stating it would come from next years budget although this has not yet been set by the Town Council. He said he hoped the money will be matched by local sponsors.
The Town Clerk told me the Town Partnership has a large sum of money unspent given by the Town Council so maybe that would be a good starting point for sponsorship.
Whatever happens I hope it will be a successful fun event for all.
I hope it wont be tainted like this years Royal Wedding Celebration attended by many drunken local dignitaries.

It was good to see reading the Rutland Times Uppingham Town Council is to consult its residents and ask them how they would like to celebrate.

Oakham Carnival Funds Public Money given away
Oakham Carnival Chairman Cllr Maureen Dodds, earlier this year gave away the carnival funds to various charities of her choice, instead of returning the money to Oakham Town Council.
Rules state grants can only be given for the use and benefit of residents in a parish in this case Oakham.
The grants must be spent within the 12 months or return to the authority who awarded the grant.
The town council was expecting the money to be returned without using a formal request so it could use the money to fund an event this year in Cutts Close.
Cllr Maureen Dodds obviously was not happy with this and went away and said she distributed the money to Oakham and Rutland Charities.
At the time I complained and as normal was ignored by the Town Council and Rutland County Council.
I have since made another request for the council to attempt to recover the lost funds, the Town Clerk has now agreed to seek advice from NALC
Oakham Carnival was disbanded after a huge argument amongst committee members. Cllr Dodds as the Chairman I believe made the wrong decision to wind up the committee's affairs on her own.

Christmas Lights, Oakham, Rutland
Last night the Mayor Cllr Lucas complimented the Clerk for his hard work for obtaining 3 quote for new Christmas lights and thanked him for his 20 page report and asked for her thanks to be minuted. It was only 14 pages. The Clerk then said only four pages were his work! Such a waste of expensive red paper. around 154 sheets of paper in total were distributed.
I say a waste because no one had originally asked the Clerk to go out and seek quotes for the new lights.
This was later agreed. I raised this with members previously this is why the Mayor was determined to thank him for his efforts.
At the last nights meeting the Clerk presented a fourth option thankfully verbally "we don't do anything this year"
The council agreed what a waste of time and money.
The Council then went onto agree further quotes and a plan should be obtained for new lights for Christmas 2012.
