Oakham Parking still a big Issue

"I have a big worry about future parking in Oakham. The council car park is currently closed, because its being used for the vaccination centre. South Street car park is already full most days, because council staff are parking there..... what will happen when the shops open in 3 weeks???? I was thinking the council could possibly put on a park and ride from The Enterprise park??? It will be an issue"!

With Lockdown slowly being lifted people are starting to worry about other issues that cause concern here in Oakham.

Parking and Rutland County Council is always high on the agenda.

I wonder if a park ride service would be ever be used many towns have tried it and its failed, some have been successful.

A lot of people moan here in Oakham that they have to pay for parking in the first place so I wonder if they would pay the extra bus fare?

The car park at the council offices is being used for a good purpose and looks likely to continue for some months.

The museum car park has lost a number of spaces to the children's centre and the council cars.

I wonder if Rutland County Council should not be considering a park and ride service for its staff as they return to work and perhaps the shop owners, workers and other business owners that operate from the town centre?

Rutland County Council, Parking, Stamford Road, Edmonton Way, Oakham, Rutland

Stamford Road Oakham Rutland

Stamford is a heavenly site for residents, after Rutland County Council
imposed parking restrictions because their crazy parking policy caused
residents a big headache for many months.

You might think the problem of staff parking has been resolved by the council?

No is the answer to that...

Rutland County Council has just simply moved the problem onto
other residents.

For example Edmonton Road, Oakham has now become one of the
latest council staff car parks.

For information fat cat Tory Councillors are not affected by the
councils daft parking policy. They are not subject to car share
as they turn up to meetings in their shiny Jags and Land Rovers
as sole drivers.

Rutland County Council, Pretending to be Green, The Dangers of the Swooning Bridge, Parking, Photographs

Rutland County Council, Pretending to be Green, The Dangers of the Swooning Bridge, Parking, Photographs

For some time now Rutland County Council has pretended to be be green by introducing a ban
on its staff using its car park if they don't car share.

It then leaves spaces empty and fills many others with pool cars.

The green policy has caused a nightmare for Stamford Road residents and other surrounding roads
every now and again the council attempts to solve the problem by introducing the more parking
restrictions pushing the problem further out of town. Often creating very dangerous situations for motorists.

Like the Swooning Bridge, Catmos Street / Mount Pleasant

Motorists approach on the wrong side of what I believe is a called a blind summit. I can only imagine the shock of the driver who pops over that summit and it greeted by a giant oil tanker or similar large vehicle.

Oakham Mayor Cllr Dewis I believe was correct when he said Rutland County Council has "no parking strategy"

For a very long time there have been complaints made about Rutland County Council staff parking
dangerously along Stamford Road.

What have Rutland County Council done about it, created many dangerous situations for motorists.
Like above the parking restrictions have been push to the town boundary and as you can see
motorists have to pass parked cars on another bend on the wrong side of the road.

There is currently evidence of collisions scattered nearer to the council offices.

Rutland County Council should stop pretending to be green and let their staff fill the empty
spaces in their car park before there is a serious accident.

Residents who live in and around Stamford Road in Oakham are being asked for their views on how best to manage street parking in their area.

Residents who live in and around Stamford Road in Oakham are being asked for their views on how best to manage street parking in their area.
  • No waiting at any time on Stamford Road (Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm)
  • 2 hour parking on roads off Stamford Road (including the Edmonton Way estate and Sculthorpe Close)

Rutland County Council is starting a formal consultation, which is the final stage before implementation, this week on a number of proposals, and anybody interested has until 17 September to make their views known.

View the Stamford Road Parking Consultation webpage for more details

Council Leader Roger Begy commented: “We’ve been speaking to people living in this area of Oakham for some months, and these proposals are the result of lots of dialogue and informal discussions. We hope we’ve come up with a solution that will actually solve a problem rather than move it from one area to another.”
Councillor Begy added: “It’s a difficult balancing act and a great deal of thought and consideration has gone into these detailed proposals. We’ve had to consider the impact of any changes not only on those who currently use certain roads for parking, but also for residents and visitors to homes in the local area.”
Councillor Begy went on to say: “We’ve considered this area of Oakham as part of  a wider review of parking across the whole town.  This is the first time that the council has carried out a full review rather than dealing with problems in isolation. I hope that will put us in a good position for the future.”
The main proposals being advertised for consultation are:
The full list of changes to parking regulations for Stamford Road, the Edmonton Way estate and Sculthorpe Close, can be viewed in the Rutland Times (23 August) or on the council website by following the link above.
Visitors to Customer Services at the Council Offices can also view a large map of the proposals.
Comments received will be taken into account before the proposals are finalised.

Rutland County Council Social Worker writes to local residents seeking free parking.

Rutland County Council Social Worker writes to local residents seeking free parking.

From November Rutland County Council will be charging all staff to park in the council car park.

The social worker suggests if residents allowed council staff to use their drives to park instead
of paying the council, they would benefit  because any one looking to case their joint for a possible burglary maybe deterred by seeing a car in the drive.

I have heard this work in London but in general the motorist pay the house owner.

Barleythorpe Road, Oakham, Residents, Question Rutland County Council, Parking, Parks School

Barleythorpe Road Oakham, Residents Question Rutland County Council, Parking, Parks School

Residents from Barleythorpe Road, questioned Rutland County Council.

For many years residents have enjoyed a unwritten informal agreement, they can park their cars in the school grounds, so not to cause traffic problems along the Barleythorpe Road.

Residents want confirmation they would be able to continue this arrangement once the school has closed.

The deputy leader Councillor Terry King answered residents concerns and said he would discuss the matter with property services.

Later in the meeting Cllr King answering a similar question from Councillor Gale, let slip Rutland County Council obviously knew what they had planned for the site, when the security the site was mentioned, he said it may have to be locked when it was used for storage.

It is my understanding the highways depot is closing and the offices returning to the main council offices.
They have no place to store the trucks and other vehicles. I wonder if they are going to be stored at the Parks School site.

Oakham Parking Note Takes The Biscuit!!!

Oakham Parking Note Takes The Biscuit!!!

Parking is difficult for road users here in Oakham, very keen enforcement officers always looking to raise Rutland County Councils revenue.

This large car was parked in one of Oakham smallest streets along with another the note seemed to work.

Of course it was not the note but another case of who the driver was, surely not?

Stamford Road Oakham Parking Dangers Rutland County Council

Rutland County Council is set to introduce a series of ‘no parking’ zones along one of the busiest routes in and out of Oakham.

Residents who live along Stamford Road attended Full Council earlier this week to highlight their concerns about the number of cars parked outside their homes during working hours. most of the problem has been caused by Rutland County Council They say it presents a danger not only to traffic using the road, but also to those who live in the area and have obstructed views when pulling off their driveways.

The council has promised to conduct a full parking review after the election but as the road is a major route in and out of town, “h-bar” no parking markings will be put in place during the next few weeks to prevent parking in front of accesses and aid sufficient visibility for residents accessing their properties until a permanent solution is agreed. I hope there is not a accident on this bend before they do something.

Strategic Director for Places, Aman Mehra commented: “The council is aware of the difficulties being experienced along Stamford Road. This is a major route in and out of Oakham with a significant number of cars, as well as large vehicles, using the road every day. It’s important that we do something now in advance of a more permanent solution after the election”.

Stamford Road Oakham use with great caution you never know what is around the bend

Mr. Mehra added: “The council is also working closely with local police who are now actively monitoring this stretch of road and will support the council in taking appropriate action. I’d urge motorists to park in the pay-and-display car parks. Not only is your car safer in a patrolled car park, but a season ticket works out at less than £1.50 per day”.

Public car parks are available in Oakham in several locations including Burley Road, Westgate and South Street (long-stay), Church Street and Brooke Road (short-stay).
Discounted tickets are available from the pay and display machines on the long stay car parks at just £8 for weekly parking (Monday – Friday) or £9.50 (Monday – Saturday).

Regular users of the car parks can buy a year-long season ticket for use on all long stay car parks which costs £350 (Monday – Friday) or £410 (Monday – Saturday, Catmose on Saturdays only) or, for use on Westgate car park only, £320 (Monday-Friday) and £370 (Monday-Saturday). Pay and display machines also accept card payments.

Rutland County Councils Dangerous Obstructions Dean's Street Oakham

Rutland County Council Dangerous Obstruction

Above is one of the new dangerous additions to Dean's Street Oakham.

Dean's Street is a one way system, traffic leaves the street at this point, onto Melton Road. If one of S A P S  customers parks here because they are too lazy to park their 4x4 in the car park at the rear of the store.

The driver can not see up Melton Road.

I watched a near miss as a car came out of  Dean's and car left Melton Road to park in the other new space that obstructs cars turning left. It nearly hit the car.

What was Mr Brown at Highways thinking of when he agreed this change. Has he not read his High Code it is illegal to park this close to a junction.

Rutland Driving Instuctors

It appears all Rutland driving instructors teach parking in disabled bays is fine.

(I am told Cllr Mark Woodcocks driving school would not recommend this)

Posh Car Free Parking in Oakham

When I was a Town Councillor members of the public brought to my attention parking enforcement officers were turning a blind eye to those who are bit well off compared with the rest of the population of Oakham.

I spoke to the parking manager to let him know that people were concerned, his staff seemed to have arrangements with some very well off local drivers and gave him details I was given. He told me things were changing.

Many months have passed and people are still noticing tickets are not being issued to certain drivers.

Another unknown resident has taken to blogging photographs

http://dirkwearswhite.tumblr.com/page/2

This week I spotted a member of the public who is so fed up , they have taken to issuing their own tickets!

I would like to know why these cars are being ignored most can be left in one hour bays all day, while a shopper can be five minutes over and receive a fine.
