Now Then, Artist Monica Fernandez, Gaol Street Mural, Arts Council, Central England Co-operative, Oakham Town Council & Partnership, Oakham School, Arts4Rutland, Hambletons, Tim Norton Ford, Rutland Plastics, Travis Perkins

Now Then Gaol Street Mural Project.

Oakham Town Council have successfully gained funding from Arts Council England, to develop an
public art project on Gaol Street.

The project, in the form of a tiled mural, will celebrate the industrial heritage of the town, as well as reflecting the present and future. It will be interesting to see if the town council get the correct history. Oakham does not have much industrial heritage. plenty of farming history, Is clock making industrial? it has a heritage of clothing and rope making and many work houses.

The project organisers are calling on local residents to contribute their creative ideas, via a series of workshops, drop in sessions and online platforms.

The site of the artwork, at Central England Co-operative Funeralcare, was previously home to a mural, and public opinion and consultation has confirmed that local audiences want to see something creative happen in the space again.

The project, led by Oakham based artist Monica Fernandez, is titled Now Then.

Organisers are inviting local residents to a series of workshops to be held in the town centre, where they will be supported to bring and develop creative ideas in the form photographs, memories, and letters. Social media will also be used for sharing ideas and developing the content of the mural.

Monica, who has led many high profile public art projects to date, says “This will be a great opportunity for residents of all ages to take part in the creative process, and share a sense of ownership. Working together we will create a mural that Oakham can be proud of for many years to come”.

The finished artwork will be installed in September this year.

The main funders of the project are Arts Council England, Oakham Town Council, Rutland County Council and The Midlands Co-operative. Main partners of this project are Arts for Rutland, Oakham Town Partnership and Oakham School. Local sponsorship includes

Hambletons Food

Rutland Plastic Limited

Tim Norton (Ford Dealership)

Travis Perkins. (Oakham)

“The support from the local sponsors is fantastic, the enthusiasm and drive from all those involved is indicative of the fact that Oakham is rightly so one of the best places to live as was recently reported in the national press.

I am looking forward to the completed Mural, I believe the fun part is the creative bit though and I would ask that the people of Oakham take advantage of and engage with the workshops with Monica”. - Oakham Mayor, Adam Lowe.

The first public envent will be the launch event and will be held in Victoria Hall on Saturday May 11th
form 11.00am until 3.00pm residents of Oakham are encouraged to do the leg work for the artist by taking along photographs, etc that may be incorporated into the final design.

Restricing this to Oakham only residents is foolish. I know people who worked in Oakham's past industrial times came from out of town and have many photographs of former companies.

Like many Rutland Projects it has a facebook page advertised, unfortunatley like the organisors Oakham Town Council its happy to take and spend vast somes of public money and then restrict public access by making the page a closed group. That could explain the reason the group currently has one member the Artist  who will receive thousands of pounds (12.04.14)

https://www.facebook.com/groups/524177541025359/

Looking forward to seeing the completed project, although I do not believe the price tag placed by the artist is justified.

It is also a shame the Co-op went public with their original plans to fully pay for the work, to be created
by Oakham Primary School Children.

Oakham Post Office sub-postmaster sent to prison for the theft of £113,000, Arts 4 Rutland, Kendrew Barracks, Arts Council

(This was not a Horizon case. This postmistress had taken money over a a period of time, she run more than one post office. When Auditors visited, she moved funds between branches in an attempt to cover her thefts over a number of years)

Oakham Post Office sub-postmaster sent to prison for the theft of £113,000

In court she said trading had been difficult since 2010.

Post Office Limited pays all the country's 9,000 sub-postmasters a minimum payment of £10,000 a year

Additional Income is earned from bonuses and sales.

(a local trader said they have sympathy for the manager, I wonder if they had £113,000 of their stock stolen they would hold the culprit in such high regard?)

If trade was so poor I wonder why the family sponsored local charities such as Oakham In Bloom?
The Chairman of Oakham in Bloom was reprimanded last year, She is also a Town Councillor and was the Chair of Oakham Carnival and after a committee row she disbanded the carnival and gave away thousands
of pounds of public money. The Councils Solicitors said the Town Council was a fault for not attaching conditions to the money granted.

It seems that most local groups are controlled by the same few people and large sums of public money
float around with few checks around how it is spent. If you try to gain access to information they hide behind
charity status.

This week I published the minutes of a Arts 4 Rutland Committee meeting obtained and published in the public interest.

Those minutes show how the Curve Leicester apparently supports their bid for an Arts Council grant, for
an event to be held at Kendrew Barracks in 2014. It is suggest the Committee made up of the same old elite
I hope the Arts Council do proper checks before granting any large amount of public money. Especially when the minutes also suggest the committee might like to hide some of the income from ticket sales.

After publishing this post, I expect Leicestershire's Detective Sergeant Mc Donald to be reminded of his comment
"you should not interfere in local politics"

It seems to me Leicestershire Police needs some political training and keep their nose out of local politics.

Politics is meant to be for all not just the rotten elite of this town and county.

Rutland County Museum Oakham to sell 27 items

Rutland County Councils Cabinet will meet on Tuesday to approve selling or disposal of 27 items that used to be on show at Rutland County Museum.

Conservative Council Peter Jones portfolio holder for the Arts and Culture, would like the public to believe these items are junk. Many of these items were on display before his mini cinema destroyed our museum.

I came across many disappointed visitors, who found they could not visit the museum during half term because it was closed to show films.

It is my belief councillor Jones has no real interest in Arts and Culture, he might be keen to attend a reception for the free nibbles and booze but that is all!

I was very concerned to read in the budget cuts accepted and set by Councillor Peter Jones and his cabinet, no arts group will be awarded any grant from Rutland County Council in brackets accept (Arts for Rutland)
This elite group should be treated equal.Councillor Peter Jones is a committee member and Joy Everett is also a committee member. She also runs The Oakham Festival and meddled in The defunct Oakham Carnival, Oakham Town Council sometime ago adopted the same grant funding policy and give exclusivly to the Festival. They granted public funds without any knowledge of how the tax payers money will be spent.

I was wondering if Rutland County Council do the same and ask Councillor Jones to inform them at a later date how the funds are spent.

He is currently desperately seeking a £25,000 grant from the Arts Council to fund their joint summer event.

Last year he assisted in squandering a £100,000 grant, over half was spent on administration and publicity £37,000 on plastic hippos they can not afford to dispose of.

Whilst on the subject of Councillor Peter Jones, Could the respectable drunken ex mayor Mr Beech take a break from a "Piss Up in the Brewery" (from his facebook) and Visit Councillor Jones in the Chamber with a collection of ties and a comb.

Rutland County Council has a rule similar to the one Oakham town Council got rid off, men must wear ties! Councillor Peter Jones chooses to ignore this rule. If you don't want to put on a repeat performance at Rutland County Councils chamber, get your wife Carol to take them into work and give him a choice, if she is also sober and capable?

One of Rutland's missing hippos has been returned home

One of Rutland's missing hippos has been returned home ... the baby fibreglass hippo from Lyddington was found in a hedge near Braunstone.
But two of the hippos are still missing. They're part of the Arts for Rutland trail.
Meanwhile two men have been cautioned for vandalising one of the hippos at the weekend.

Rutland Hippo Trail

This afternoon I thought it would be nice to attempt to find some of this Hippo's from The Rutland Hippo Trail.

I am sorry but what a waste of time and I am told  Art for Rutland  is printing 20,000 leaflets for  tourists.

The Trail was launched Friday, 1. Gaol Street no Hippo, 2. Jerwoods Oakham School no hippo, 3. Dean Street No Hippo, 4. Music and More No Hippo,

Then we come to number 5 the Rutland Radio Hippo stuck inside in case of theft, this was meant to be the graffiti Hippo so I expected something inspiring or a tad controversial no luck there the event was clinically arrange by Rutland County Council Youth Service. Inside a church hall. State sponsored graffiti whatever next. I guess the young people enjoyed the free high from the spray paint used in a confined space.

6 Saddler Court off Lands End Way takes you for a tour of the incomplete industrial, retail and housing park.
No Hippo

7. Lands End Way Hippo still in place an attempt has been made to make it a little more secure.

8. Schofield Road RPC Hippo yes still there the only one secured in accordance to the makers instructions.

If Arts for Rutland had spent less on its launch parties they may have been able to afford to secure the others correctly. Instead of using cheap padlocks that cost as much as one of the bottles of wine consumed at these events.

While I am ranting about Arts will the bums who work for Rutland County Councils, Little Build who show no consideration for Victoria Hall or its contents please lock up at night when you leave for home.  The artist exhibiting was most unhappy to be called late at night to tell him the hall doors were open to anyone. I have complained about this lack of concern to RCC in the past are they going to pay for the artists work when it is stolen?

One of nice reasons to live in Oakham is your never far from the nice things about England

Rutland Hippo Trail Launch

Oakham Festival Launch was combined with the launch of Rutland Hippo Trail. The reception was held at Rutland County Museum.

The Children's Hippos will remain on display at the museum here in Oakham for the duration of the Oakham Festival.

To see photograph of Hippos  decorated by children from all Rutlands schools click this link.
http://martinbrookes.blogspot.com/2010/06/rutland-hippos-from-all-schools.html

The decorating of the Hippos by the children may have been fun, there was also a serious education side to the project.

Wild in Art Ltd. provide schools with an education pack.

A quick glance at the pack last night I find the students are guided through the design process, then learn to discuss and develop, define, deliver and evaluate ideas, this involves group work, students create drawings and paintings,

The ideas are then developed during discussion, looking at details of individual sketch books.

They then learn to define, with presentations and further discussion.

Once this is all completed it is time to deliver the project.

Then the final stage is to evaluate, a time for the students to reflect and think.
