Rutland Multum-in-Parvo Beer Festival, Camra, Rutland County Museum
Thursday 23rd - Sunday 26th June 2011
The programme advises:
The exhibits in the Museum (what remains) are a wonderful example of agricultural machinery; great to look at,but definitely not for touching. Apart from the risk of damage to the equipment, some of it can inflict serious injury.
Festival goers are asked not to place drinking glasses where they may damage exhibits if knocked over.
Beer and museums surely don't mix?
Why was the event not held at Rutland Water Four Winds Festival or in a tent in the Council Car Park or Chamber?
The festival goers are asked not to smoke in the museum garden. The museum garden is a hidden gem created and maintained by Oakham in Bloom volunteers, a garden much smaller than my own. I hope this won't get trashed.

Last Chance to see Rutland Hippos Photographed at Rutland County Museum Oakham
Yes it the last chance to see some of Rutland Hippo's
they have been transported from secure surroundings of
St George's Barracks and put on display
before they will return to be sold by auction
to raise funds for a good charity
the Army Benevolent Fund.
Some of the money is being creamed of for Arts for Rutland
not such a good cause in my opinion.
If you can afford the £35 a ticket for the event you could go along
and put a bid in for a Hippopotamus's Bottom
The fibreglass project that saw Elephants all over London last
summer has been heavily criticised in the press as being a
environmental disaster, one can not be critical off the
Rutland Hippo's we must all be excited and love them.
or members of Arts for Rutland Committee get very upset
and if your lucky they might send you vile threatening e-mails
and then have to resign as a consequence of such actions.
The Rutland Hippo Project cost the tax payer £37,228.05
so if you are going to bid make it a good one.
£37,228.05
It is my view the Conservative members of Rutland County
Council have destroyed our Museum
Live@themuseum cost the tax payer £16,000 last year
instead of cutting jobs at the council cut the losses.
Maybe after the election we will have a new Councillor
responsible for Arts and Culture one who will turn
the place back into a museum.
If you are thinking of nicking another Hippo beware of the
CCTV
and the Alarm
If you want to own a Hippo and join in the excitement details can be found here http://martinbrookes.blogspot.com/2011/04/last-chance-to-see-arts-for-rutland.html

In 2000 metal detectorist, Ken Wallace, and other volunteers from the Hallaton Fieldwork Group came across some Roman pottery in a field outside their village in Southeast Leicestershire.
Along with the Hallaton Fieldwork group, The University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) began excavating what turned out to be one of the most important Iron Age sites in Britain.
They discovered over five thousand silver and gold coins, the remains of an ornately decorated Roman parade helmet and some mysterious silver finds.
The Treasure was found near the village of Hallaton in south east Leicestershire in what was once an Iron Age shrine.
You can also explore the world of the ancient Britons in the new Hallaton Treasure Gallery at Harborough Museum through illustrated displays, computer interactives and film footage.
Update:
A two thousand year old dog that was sacrificed and buried to guard the Hallaton Treasure will go on display for the first time at Harborough Museum on Saturday 29th January 2011.

The Great Seal of England Grant of Manorial Title for the Manor of Ketton Rutland County Museum
The seal is known as the Second Great Seal of Queen Elizabeth I and was used in the latter part of her reign from 1586-1603. This impression is made from wax and would have been pressed from an original bronze matrix which was engraved by Nicholas Hilliard who was an artist specialising in miniature portraits.
The document attached to the seal is a grant of licence to John Harrington given by Queen Elizabeth I on 2nd September 1594. It gave royal approval to the transfer of Ketton manor to Richard Stace.
Although seals were widely used during this time, the Great Seal was important as it was used only by the monarch to approve public acts and announcements. It is rare to find completely intact wax seals in such good condition. This Seal is especially interesting for Rutland County Museum, as it relates to the local area.
On one side of the seal, Elizabeth is on horseback riding in a field of flowering plants. This is said to symbolise hope and prosperity and the queen's femininity. She is surrounded by the Tudor Rose of England, the Harp of Ireland and Fleur-de-lys of France.
The inscription around the edge of the seals reads 'Elizabetha dei gracia Anglie Francie at Hibernie Of England, France AND Ireland, Defender Of the Faith.
The Seal can be seen at Rutland County Museum, it is on loan from Hanson Cement

Councillor Joyce Lucas, Resigns from the Friends of Rutland County Museum.
Oakham Town Councillor Joyce Lucas has resigned from the friends of Rutland County Museum.
The reason is not clear, it could be because she disagreed with the big sell off or a disapproval of the forthcoming CAMRA Beer festival to be held in the museum this summer.
One thing that was very clear she is very critical of the staff employed at the museum. "No local knowledge" amongst other things.

the first CAMRA beer festival in Rutland at the Museum
the first CAMRA beer festival in Rutland at the Museum on 25th and 26th June.
I heard a rumour this was going to happen last year.
in the Museum?
This could be interesting will they hang a few drunks for fun?
It a long time since Oakham Gallows have been used.
The museum has never been a whole day out, but since the introduction of the cinema space and the expansion of the shop, there is little to see.
It seems the museum is on its way out and becoming a money making centre for events.
Only this week the council said it was going to flog off 27 exhibits.
We are told local history groups were consulted.
A person said to me today ""they did not consult the Rutland families who donated some of the items"
Are there still Friends of The Museum?

Rutland Hippo's auction Officer’s Mess at St. George’s Barracks, North Luffenham. ABF The Soldiers' Charity with Julia Bradbury
Hippo's will be auctioned to raise funds for ABF The Soldiers' Charity
Hippo Farewell Gala Dinner - 21st May 2011 - Time 7.30pm
The fibreglass sculptures that caused such a stir throughout the county last year and cost a staggering £37,000 plus are just three months away from going under the auctioneers hammer. There will be a chance to win a hippo for £10!
Joy Everett said, “We’ve decided to add a bit of fun to the event with a sealed £10 draw. The lucky winner of this will also walk away with a Hippo – but for the cost of just £10.
the Hippos will be on show for one last time at Rutland County Museum throughout April”
Organisers of the event, raising money for the ABF The Soldiers' Charity and Arts for Rutland (to support local artists?), expect a sell-out and are advising purchasing your tickets sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.
The auction, hosted by TV star Julia Bradbury, takes place on Saturday May 21st at 7.30pm, as part of a Gala Dinner (5 piece band and 3 course meal) in the Officer’s Mess at St. George’s Barracks, North Luffenham.
Tickets cost £35 per person and include pre-dinner drinks and wine on the table. Tables of 10 are available if you are planning on bringing a group.

Rutland County Museum Oakham to sell 27 items
Rutland County Councils Cabinet will meet on Tuesday to approve selling or disposal of 27 items that used to be on show at Rutland County Museum.
Conservative Council Peter Jones portfolio holder for the Arts and Culture, would like the public to believe these items are junk. Many of these items were on display before his mini cinema destroyed our museum.
I came across many disappointed visitors, who found they could not visit the museum during half term because it was closed to show films.
It is my belief councillor Jones has no real interest in Arts and Culture, he might be keen to attend a reception for the free nibbles and booze but that is all!
I was very concerned to read in the budget cuts accepted and set by Councillor Peter Jones and his cabinet, no arts group will be awarded any grant from Rutland County Council in brackets accept (Arts for Rutland)
This elite group should be treated equal.Councillor Peter Jones is a committee member and Joy Everett is also a committee member. She also runs The Oakham Festival and meddled in The defunct Oakham Carnival, Oakham Town Council sometime ago adopted the same grant funding policy and give exclusivly to the Festival. They granted public funds without any knowledge of how the tax payers money will be spent.
I was wondering if Rutland County Council do the same and ask Councillor Jones to inform them at a later date how the funds are spent.
He is currently desperately seeking a £25,000 grant from the Arts Council to fund their joint summer event.
Last year he assisted in squandering a £100,000 grant, over half was spent on administration and publicity £37,000 on plastic hippos they can not afford to dispose of.
Whilst on the subject of Councillor Peter Jones, Could the respectable drunken ex mayor Mr Beech take a break from a "Piss Up in the Brewery" (from his facebook) and Visit Councillor Jones in the Chamber with a collection of ties and a comb.
Rutland County Council has a rule similar to the one Oakham town Council got rid off, men must wear ties! Councillor Peter Jones chooses to ignore this rule. If you don't want to put on a repeat performance at Rutland County Councils chamber, get your wife Carol to take them into work and give him a choice, if she is also sober and capable?

Northamptonshire Visitors to Oakham Rutland, were disappointed to find things closed due to Rutland County Council Cuts
After a trek from the Castle they found the Museum is also Closed on Monday's
I advised them Wednesday is a good day to visit as everything is open and its Market Day.
If the Council is going to close these places on Monday to save cash, could they consider turning of the outside lights during the day! The saving could pay for the part time librarian they asking the Town Council to fund.
